Overview

The Chaligne Refuge is a beautiful stone and wood building in typical alpine style, located near the alpine pasture of the same name on the slopes of the famous and popular Pointe de Chaligne, the symbolic mountain of the territory of Gignod.
The route follows the route of one of the paths that starts directly from the town of Gignod and climbs towards the Pointe de Chaligne. Therefore, the elevation gain and the length of the trip. require a good degree of training.
The ascent takes place in environments that are always varied and crosses the entire hillside overlooking Gignod, we go from pastures dotted with numerous huts, to the dense and cool Bois Noir that even in the height of summer ensures a pleasant coolness.
The arrival at the hut, which will be seen only at the last moment, will give a wonderful panoramic view towards the Valpelline.

Reaching the start

From the Aosta East tollbooth, take the tunnel along the E27 road leading into the Great St. Bernard Valley, at the end of which you meet the SS27 coming from the center of Aosta. Continue along reaching Gignod; as soon as you pass the town hall building, with the medieval tower behind it, turn right immediately entering the large parking lot on the left.

The route

Start from the parking lot next to the Gignod town hall, dominated by the Calvino Tower, and cross the Gran San Bernardo SS27 road, following it downhill towards Aosta for a few tens of meters, until you meet near a house the trail marker for trail 2B.
You ascend a meadow alongside some vegetable gardens, and quickly arrive at the houses of Chez Percher 1004 m where you cross two asphalt roads, the second connecting Gignod with Excenex.
You immediately resume climbing the not-too-dense wooded ridge, with views of the rock walls of the Gignod cliff, crossing a dirt track under which the Ru Neuf flows as well as the route of the Balteo path.
We cross a scenic pasture with the alpine pastures of Peroulaz 1295 m crossing an asphalt road near a hairpin bend, which must be left to the right continuing westward through the forest again until we reach the group of beautiful huts in a sunny position of Ronc désot 1444 m, where we find a fountain.
We follow the dirt track to the right, briefly entering the forest before returning to the slope upstream of Ronc, where we meet the junction with path 2/2A coming from the hamlet Cré di Gignod.
From here on, the paths will coincide; we immediately enter the extensive Bois Noir that lines the lower part of the Pointe de Chaligne slope, and gradually becomes thicker and cooler, even in summer. The sun filters through here sporadically, and the ground is often covered with mosses.
On several occasions a dirt road intersects, which should be followed briefly always being guided by the numerous markers on the stones. In two small clearings there are wooden benches where you can rest, before resuming the walk, which is never too strenuous.
At an altitude of 2000 m, you leave the paths directed to the Pointe de Chaligne, to continue to the right along track 2A directed to the Chaligne Refuge, following the signs on the post.
In a few minutes and after a short descent, still in dense forest, you reach the stone structure of the Chaligne Refuge, with the alpine pasture of the same name just below. Suddenly the panorama opens up with grand views of the Valpelline with the Grand Combin in the background. The green meadows around the hut and its small artificial lake make this place a true panoramic balcony.
