Overview

The Tête de Choume is the first summit of the coastline from Plan Puitz to the Tete de Barasson. At the outbreak of World War I, there were fears of a possible Swiss invasion, so a series of fortifications, now known as the Cadorna Line, were quickly erected, ranging from the Aosta Valley to Lombardy. Near the Tête de Choume we find some important evidence at Plan Puitz. This itinerary, more ski-mountaineering than at Plan Puitz, nevertheless gives an idea of the sense of having built fortifications in this area, in fact from up here the control over the passage of the Great St. Bernard Pass is total.The proposed route is the classic ascent route with departure from Eternod dessous, where we meet a characteristic and colorful chapel, taking us to the entrance of the Vallon de Barasson and then going up the beautiful forests of Plan Puitz. There are no particularly treacherous passages so it should be considered a good choice for all weather and snow conditions. The descent is on the same slope with no particular route obligations.

Reaching the start

From the Aosta East tollbooth take the tunnel leading into the Great St. Bernard Valley and continue along it, passing the villages of Gignod and Etroubles.Just before Saint-Oyen turn right, following the signs for Prailles. Go up the communal road for 3.6 km until you reach the junction for the small village of Prailles dessous: go straight on in the direction of Eternod dessous, which you reach a couple of kilometers later. Without descending into the hamlet, leave your car at the fork.

The route

From the car follow the rural road to the first hairpin bend, leave the road and go up the open pastures until you reach the rural road again. Continue along the uphill road that, after two hairpin bends, crosses at the top reaching the Barasson pasture. Start the ascent of the beautiful Plan Puitz forest choosing the best route according to snow conditions. As the ascent progresses the forest thins out slowly giving way to the summit slope. By now the summit is widely identifiable thanks to a pylon placed near it, veer to the right to climb the last section up to the Tête de Choume 2349 m. Descent:The descent is on the ascent route without any particular obligatory passages. The first part of the descent has the best skiable characteristics.

Description

Partita da casa sci ai piedi per giro tranquillo, considerando anche il rischio valanghe e il forte vento di questi ultimi due giorni. Neve bella nella parte alta e nel bosco, a lastroni sfondosi nella parte bassa. Temperature molto basse per tutta la giornata.

Meteo sereno temperatura gradevole. Non girare x Eternon dessous ma proseguire sulla destra si arriva appena sopra la piazzetta park di Eternon Dessous poco park ma si puo parkeggiare lato strada dove parte stradina poderale x alpe Barasson al momento seguire la stradina integralmente fino all’alpe Barasson x ora stradina innevata integralmente fuori poca neve. Sopra l’alpe la situazione neve migliora su farina in ombra e placche dure il bosco nella prima parte un po più fitto poi si dirada. Punta un po a sinistra del traliccio ometto. Discesa con un po di intuito su placche dure con farinella e poi in ombra farina ottime curvette non eccelsa ma sempre sciabile.

Veloce gita sopra casa. Neve ventata in alto alla partenza della discesa; molto bella, farinosa e abbondante, nel bosco. Divertente slalom!! Ultimo tratto sulla strada poderale per allungare un po’ il giro.
