Overview

Beautiful loop itinerary that traverses two ru of the Ollomont valley.
The ru are streams created on the sides of the mountain to bring water to drier areas; in some sections they are clearly visible, in others they have been buried.
The views over the basin of By, the Grand Combin and the Mont Gelé coastline make up for the long hike.
Surely, however, the part you won't forget about this itinerary is the crossing of the long tunnel (about 800 meters) that you have to go through alongside the water channel.
The tunnel, which is a little more than a meter wide and 170 to 200 cm high, is illuminated but it is advisable to have a good flashlight that improves visibility.
It is not advisable for those who suffer from claustrophobia.

Reaching the start

From the Aosta East tollbooth take the tunnel that leads into the Great St. Bernard Valley and continue along it.
After about a hundred meters from the exit of the second tunnel, turn right for Valpelline.
After the village of Valpelline, on the left begins the road that leads to Ollomont.
Follow it until you come to the town hall square, continue for a few hundred more meters and then turn left and leave the car in the large parking lot in Rey.

The route

From the parking lot cross the stream and take the wide path of the Alta via n.1.
You continue through the forest until you reach the flat trail of the Ru du Mont.
You follow it to the right with a nice flat path through dense forest, pass near the mine and reach the Vaud meadows (if this stretch is done in early summer there are beautiful and abundant blooms of martagon lily).
You pass through the village of Vaud and at its end, near a votive shrine, (signposts) the trail begins, climbing up through meadows until you reach a rural road near a hut.
From this point, follow the steep rural road that leads with narrow turns through the dense steep larch forest to the Chevière alp.
From the alp, continue until you reach the road that connects Champillon to the By basin.
Follow it to the left for almost a kilometer until almost to the Leytogne alp, take a branch road on the right that leads to the Tsa d'Ansermin.
After a few hundred meters you cross the ru de By, which you follow to the left with a nice route, partly over wide pastures and partly through the woods, until you reach the little church of Champillon, which is definitely worth a stop.
Continue until you reach the beautiful stone cross of Champillon from which the view of the Grand Combin and the basin of By is fantastic.
Next is a short stretch along the rural road that leads to Doues and then take the path on the left that descends into the woods.
Follow it, crossing the rural road a few times until you reach near the picnic area that you leave on the right.
You descend into the woods until you come down to the right and with a steeper path reach the road that goes up to Champillon, follow it for a small stretch and then descend to the left and reach it again further down.
A small stretch and at the hairpin bend follow the small rural road that leads to the tunnel.
In the tunnel the water of the ru flows, inside the temperature is cool and it is convenient to dress accordingly.
With the use of the flashlight one enters (the exit is not visible) and, being careful not to bang one's head up and put one's feet in the puddles existing at the bottom, one proceeds slowly inside the mountain accompanied by the sound of the flowing water.
At the exit of the tunnel, you return to the sun and continue with more or less exposed sections, pass another small tunnel and some small bridges to find the path made in the morning and quickly descend to Rey.
