Overview

The Plan Puitz site has tunnels inside it (created for military reasons) in which cannons were placed.
The tunnels have been arranged and illuminated and allow us to see how well the location could control the valley coming down from the Great St. Bernard Pass.

Reaching the start

From the Aosta East tollbooth, take the tunnel leading into the Great St. Bernard Valley and continue along it, passing the villages of Gignod, Etroubles, and Saint-Oyen.
Just before Bosses, turn right onto State Road 27 for the Great St. Bernard Pass.
Go past the village of Saint-Rhémy and continue to the next hairpin bend where, on the right, a dirt road begins where you can leave your car.

The route

From the car continue along the rural road that crosses the mountainside slightly uphill, at a fork continue always along the main rural road to the left.
The road gains altitude with a series of hairpin bends and then crosses into the woods to the right until you take the path into the woods on the left.
The path climbs steeply, crosses the rural road again at a hairpin bend.
You continue through the woods until you reach it again just before Plan Puitz, at which point you follow it to the left and shortly arrive at the mouth of the tunnel.
Having visited the tunnels, you can continue for a more uncomfortable stretch until you reach the beautiful Plan Puitz plateau or turn back a short distance and rejoin the main trail.
You cross the plateau to the left and then continue upwards overcoming the steep slope, at which point you descend steeply to the right into a small valley and then cross further to the right.
You pass near some large avalanche protection walls and then descend with narrow, steep switchbacks into the forest until you reach the car road.
After a few tens of meters you leave it to take the road on the right that descends into the village of Saint-Rhémy.
You cross the whole village that definitely deserves a careful visit to the details until you reach the main road again.
Go up along it until the first hairpin bend and reach the place where the car is parked.
