Overview

Mont Labiez is a peak located on the long north ridge of Mont Fallère.
A watershed between the Vallon de Flassin and the Comba d'Ars is climbed from this side as the slope is much gentler than the decidedly more technical gullies on the north side.
Trail often in shade in the initial part remains well sunny in the upper part of the Comba d'Ars with consequent variations in the consistency of the snowpack.
The route is very varied and usually not very busy so it allows one to find fairly easy untouched descent lines.
The initial part of the route runs inside the forest making the progression a little less easy. From the Ars alpine pasture the landscape changes, you leave the forest and follow bumps and small valleys until you enter the wide Combe d'Ars.
In the final part the landscape opens up and the main peaks of the Pennine Alps appear on the horizon, from the Matterhorn to Mont Velan.
At the summit, in addition to the mentioned peaks visible in a northerly direction, unusual glimpses of Mont Fallère and the Vallon de Flassin below are appreciable.
The descent takes place on the same slope and on the same itinerary covered on the ascent, without any particular obligatory passages, which make it very pleasant.
The itinerary, classified BS, presents some sections with slight difficulties to be faced with due experience therefore it is advisable to face it with a good technical and physical preparation.

Reaching the start

From the Aosta East tollbooth, take the tunnel leading into the Great St. Bernard Valley and continue along it past the village of Gignod.
Just before Etroubles you will encounter the village of Echevennoz: leave the E27 highway by turning left of the roadway to enter the village and turn further left following the signs for Chez Les Blancs.
Continue for 400 meters until you reach the village parking lot.

The route

From the parking lot proceed in a southerly direction going up the wide slopes or the rural road until you reach the Gariache farmhouse 1472 m.
Continue to the right following the rural road on the level and then leave it after about 600 m turning left and starting to go up the forest in a narrow passage between the trees before meeting a wide clearing to be climbed up to the end keeping to the right edge.
At the end of the clearing re-enter the forest where you again meet the rural road to be followed until the beginning of the Vallon d'Ars, where the forest ends.
The climb continues skirting the Ars pasture 1974 m and climbing the wide slopes above that anticipate the entrance into a small valley. Continue keeping to the orographic right heading toward Tsa d'Ars 2260 m.
At the Tsa with a right turn crossing a basin on the flat to bring you to the foot of its eastern ridge.
Go over a section with greater gradient and join the final soft ridge where, shortly after leaving the slope, you meet a forestry bivouac.
From here, in a short time you reach the summit of Mont Labiez 2632 m topped by a cairn.

Descent:
The descent takes place on the tracks of the ascent without any particular route obligations in the upper part.
In the first part of the descent you descend back to the Tsa d'Ars on the beautiful sunny slopes before entering the small valley leading to the Ars alpine pasture.
From the latter, following the uphill tracks, return to the parking lot with crossing sections of forest.
