Overview

Mont Flassin is one of the main peaks on the southern orographic side of the Coumba Freida.
It can be ascended from several sides but normally the most popular ascent remains that from the Vallon de Flassin, both for its scenic presence and its slightly lesser difficulty.
The itinerary proposed here takes place in this very striking environment before concluding with the ascent of the summit along its western ridge.
The approach is fairly long and consists of crossing the long Vallon de Citrin, which, after crossing the wooded step behind the Coumba, develops over a wide hanging valley until it reaches the pass of the same name.
Over the pass the route becomes more technical during the ascent of the western ridge of Mont Flassin.
The last part of the ascent is closed with skis on your back.
From the antecima, however, the panorama is remarkable with wide views of the Mont Blanc massif and all the main peaks of the Graian Alps.
The descent normally takes place on the opposite side, that of the Vallon de Flassin.
The overall difficulty is fairly high, especially in the final part where you have to climb with skis on your back.

Reaching the start

From the Aosta East tollbooth, take the tunnel leading into the Great St. Bernard Valley and continue along it, passing the villages of Gignod and Etroubles.
At Saint-Oyen, leave the E27 state road by turning left, before the village, following the "Flassin-Cerisey" signs.
Continue for about 2600 m until you reach the parking lot in front of Cerisey.

The route

From the parking lot proceed in a westerly direction skirting the stream.
Continue on level ground until you reach a wide snowy pasture from which the actual access to the Vallon de Citrin departs.
Briefly ascend the snowy track of the rural road and then abandon it almost immediately, entering the initial part of the valley.
After crossing the rural road again, take the summer trail that with a series of short switchbacks goes up the dense forest quickly gaining altitude.
Near the ferruginous spring of the Citrin the path becomes more linear, keeping to the edge of the wide ridge.
Escape from the forest and shortly reach the cottages of Citrin du milieu 2005 m.
From here on, the spaces open up and the ascent, always with not excessive slopes, becomes a pleasant immersion in the snow with a succession of bumps while the imposing silhouette of Punta Valletta appears to the right of the eye.
On encountering the Citrin dessus alpine pasture bring yourself back to the central part of the valley pointing towards the Col Citrin well evident to the left of a pylon.
You ascend the last few depressions and reach the col at an altitude of 2484 m.
After a dutiful glance at the panorama that opens on the horizon, turn left to climb the wide western ridge of Mont Flassin.
The slope increases and in the last section you must remove your skis for safer progression.
Overcoming the asperity you reach the antecima of Mont Flassin 2766 m.

Descent:
The best descent is the one that develops in the Vallon de Flassin.
You overcome an initial steep section of ridge (possibly on foot) before reaching a wide saddle from which descends the beautiful valley leading to the cottages of Tsa de Flassin below.
Then return to the plateaus below with the possibility of going in search of the best line of descent.
Finally, the return takes place on the usually well-trodden carriageway from the frequency of descents by enthusiasts.
