Description

Partenza ore 7:45.

Overview

Mont Fallère is one of the best-known three-thousanders in the Aosta Valley especially for its panoramic views.
Located close to the central valley it has no particular barriers near it therefore from its summit the panorama sweeps 360° over all the Aosta Valley peaks. Normally accessible from the southern side both in summer and winter, it can also be reached from the north through a very articulated route that, however, offers all the excitement and difficulty that ski mountaineering can offer.
The proposed route initially runs along the Vallon de Flassin and then veers to the left to overcome the steep Col d'Ars.
Access to the summit is by foot on a ridge trail.
The descent takes place on the same slope and on the same route as the ascent, with a very technical route.
The itinerary, classified OSA, is overall very challenging and should be tackled with the help of a mountain guide.

Reaching the start

From the Aosta East tollbooth, take the tunnel leading into the Great St. Bernard Valley and continue along it, passing the villages of Gignod and Etroubles.
At Saint-Oyen, leave the E27 state road by turning left, before the village, following the "Flassin-Cerisey" signs.
Continue for about 2000 m until you reach the parking lot of the foyer du fond in Flassin.

The route

From the parking lot proceed in a southwesterly direction up the snow-covered meadows, leaving the ski resort lift carpet on the left, aiming for the Rond cottages clearly visible at the edge of the forest.
With not excessive ascent we enter the valley always keeping to the orographic left, before crossing the docile stream just before the Flassin dessous alp.
With an unobstructed route, continue the ascent, following mainly the summer roadway past the tenements of Flassin du milieu and into the valley, which slowly reaches the entrance for the summer trail at Col d'Ars.
Turn left down the steep gully that leads to the pass at an elevation of 2533 m.
Descend a hundred meters into the beautiful basin below the pass until where the slope decreases and you ascend to the small lakes of Ars.
Continue straight up to an altitude of 2700 m and then veer right to take on the most challenging part of the north face of Mont Fallère.
The slope increases considerably until you reach the col at an altitude of 3040 m.
Here you leave your skis on and continue with ice axe and crampons along the terminal ridge that leads to the summit, at an altitude of 3061 m, topped by a madonnina.

Descent:
The descent takes place on the ascent traces by first undertaking a very steep downhill section, followed by a pleasant ski to the col. The descent to the valley floor is again steep. Once on the Vallon de Flassin, one continues to the right on the roadway taken on the ascent, usually well beaten by the frequency of descents by enthusiasts.
