Overview

Col Serena (or Sereina) connects the Valley of the Great St. Bernard with Valdigne through the wide valley of Planaval.
The hike is one of the most popular in the area because of its ease and environmental beauty, with a route that is never too steep and allows for a pleasant ascent surrounded by nature.
The always verdant environment alternates in the first part of the beautiful coniferous forests, while beyond we pass through pastures some pastures below the steep grassy slopes of the surrounding mountains.
The panorama once reached the destination opens towards the glaciers of the Rutor group and towards the valleys of Rhêmes and Valgrisenche.

Reaching the start

From the Aosta East tollbooth, take the tunnel leading into the Great St. Bernard Valley and continue along it, passing the villages of Gignod, Etroubles, and Saint-Oyen.
Leave the road that climbs to the Great St. Bernard Pass on the right and continue on the E27 highway until you meet, on the right, the exit for the Crevacol ski resort.
Continue for about 500 m until you reach the station's large parking lot on its westernmost side.

The route

From the parking lot, follow the route of trail No. 9, which passes under the large hairpin bend of the viaduct of the road leading to the Great St. Bernard Tunnel.
After about a hundred meters, cross the stream on a bridge and then continue into a meadow in front of the Farettes Alp. After the rightmost building is the path to follow with a marker on a boulder.
You keep to the right side to overcome a wide slope, heading into the woods and continue for a short distance along the rural road and then take the path to the left that enters the woods.
On encountering the rural road at 1866 m you follow it for only a few meters to continue on the path to the left, climbing a grassy gully to a large boulder from which you need to continue to the right.
You come out in the clearing with the various huts of lower Arp du Bois 1946 m, from here you leave the farm road after about 100 m, resuming to climb on the path on the left.
After a grassy area you re-enter the forest, now sparser but also a little steeper, then reaching a wide plateau.
You continue in the wide valley, first along dry pastures and then on stony ground until you reach the pass, from where the view of the surrounding mountains suddenly widens.
With about ten minutes of slight descent to the left, on trail traces, you reach a beautiful Serena pond, enclosed between rocks.
