Allora, paesaggisticamente molto bella, grande ambiente!

Overview

Col des Angroniettes is a snowy saddle overlooking the beautiful Vallon du Bandarray and the Swiss Val Ferret. A fairly structured and challenging route, it nevertheless offers unusual views of one of the least explored parts of the western Pennine Alps.
From the pass one can also appreciate a splendid view of the eastern ridge of the Grand Golliat: in fact, from the pass, climbing a steep exposed slope, one can also reach the anticima.
The itinerary presents an initial ascent up to the Col de Saint-Rhemy and then descends briefly into the solitary Vallon de Thoules.
The final ascent is fairly steep, to be undertaken only with good ski-mountaineering technique.
The ascent is also feasible at the end of May / beginning of June when the Great St. Bernard Pass road is opened, in which case it starts from the hairpin bend at an altitude of 2080 m, (inquire about the opening of the road).
The descent is on the same route taken on the ascent with no particular route obligations.

Reaching the start

From the Aosta East tollbooth, take the tunnel leading into the Great Saint Bernard Valley and continue along it, passing the villages of Gignod, Etroubles and Saint-Oyen.
Just before Bosses turn right onto state road 27 for the Great Saint Bernard Pass.
Go past the village of Saint-Rhémy and after 1.3 km you reach the point where the road is no longer cleared of snow during the winter closure: you can park in the surrounding spaces.

The route

Proceed on the snow-covered road, following it faithfully until the shelf where you cross the Great St. Bernard stream.
Having crossed the stream, on the road bridge, turn right and take a forest track that slightly uphill skirts the hamlets of La Tuette 1778 m and shortly after passes below the Great St. Bernard Tunnel viaduct.
Descend slightly to the bottom of the gorge and then climb up on the left until meeting the state road again near Praz d'Arc 1977 m.
Continue the ascent into the wide comba passing near the alpine pasture of Praz de Farcoz.
Turn left crossing the wide hollow to climb the slope to the left of the Col de Saint-Rhémy located at 2557 m elevation.
You proceed to a short descent on the midslope to enter the Comba de Thoules.
At the end, continue into the valley keeping below the Aiguille des Sasses before tackling the final steep slope.
Rescend the wide gully and then cross to the right pointing towards the wide saddle that marks the Col des Angroniettes 2975 m.

Descent:
The descent is on the ascent route with the need for a short ascent to reach the Col de Saint-Rhemy.
Next descent takes place in the wide comba keeping along the ascent route or, in later season on the right reaching the hairpin bend above Pra d'Arc.
Descent is pleasant and normally always in good conditions that in the final stretch, near the viaduct of the Great St. Bernard tunnel, slightly steepens.
