Description

The Colle nord de Menouve is located at the northern end of the valley of the same name, and was a pass once used to trespass into Switzerland. The hike to reach it is free of difficulty, and takes place partly on farm roads from the many mountain pastures encountered, alternating with sections of pleasant trail that are never steep except for the last 100 m of ascent. The development of the trail is rather long, so it requires good training.In the summer period the area is full of grazing herds...

Description

Siamo partiti da Prailles Dessous facendo il n. 20; alla deviazione per l’Alpe Arvus, abbiamo proseguito diritto e, dopo due tornanti, abbiamo preso la traccia sulla destra che su un vecchio tracciato oramai frequentato pochissimo, ci ha riportato sulla poderale fino all’Alpe Menouve. Su sentiero siamo quindi giunti al Colle con vista sulla catena del Monte Bianco, sulla Grivola, sul Monte Emilius e… sulla vecchia seggiovia, dismessa, in territorio svizzero. Siamo scesi facendo il n. 20 poi il n. 21 e quindi nuovamente il n. 20. Francesca ed Alessandro (CAI/ANA Biella)

Reaching the start

From the Aosta East tollbooth take the tunnel leading into the Great St. Bernard Valley and continue along it, passing the villages of Gignod and Etroubles.Just before Saint-Oyen turn right, following the signs for Prailles. Go up the communal road for 3.6 km until you reach the junction for the small village of Prailles dessous: go straight on in the direction of Eternod dessus, which you reach a couple of kilometers later. Without descending into the hamlet, continue on the road, which becomes a dirt road for about 1 km, until the second hairpin bend where you park; beyond it there is a traffic ban.

The route

From the hairpin bend, take the dirt road on the right, almost flat, which after a bend enters the Vallon de Menouve from above (the houses of Prailles, another possible starting point, can be glimpsed below). After crossing a pasture, you enter the forest, meeting the trail of the Ru Neuf d'Eternod, in the cool forest, which will lead to the pastures of Alpe Comba German 1812 m.From Comba German you neglect the road that descends to the bottom of the valley, pointing to an ancient pasture located on the grassy hump not far away, at the edge of the larch forest on the slopes of Mont Paglietta that you will have to cross. After a few switchbacks and a long traverse to the north, the forest ends near Alpe Tracaoudette 2132 m. Here you need to follow the farm track for a long stretch until you reach the entrance to the upper part of the valley. Trail No. 20, coming from Prailles, is found again, allowing you to avoid some hairpin bends. You pass in the vicinity of the alpe Tza Nuova 2421 m, which remains hidden behind a hump on the left, and continue toward the head of the gorge with the Colle Nord de Menouve, which is actually not very evident (it is not the most marked pass below the Mont de Menouve, but rather a modest notch further west).You ascend the little valley furrowed by some rivulets arising from springs, entering the part where it narrows and at the same time becomes steeper and more detrital. The last 100 m of elevation gain, however, are on a good zigzag trail. This leads to the Colle Nord de Menouve 2765 m, which overlooks the Swiss side where there are the ruins of the arrival of a disused chairlift, with related wreckage and debris scattered everywhere.To climb to the top of the nearby Bec Noir, the easiest solution is to descend to the terrace of the building via a metal ladder, then descend to the ground on the left and then climb a sort of staircase that served skiers to arrive on the viewpoint of Bec Noir 2800 m. The last section of the staircase is partly landslide but it is climbed without any particular problems.Descent is from the same route as ascent.

Partiti da Prailles Dessous. Assolutamente niente neve, solo una chiazzetta nella parte alta del vallone. Gli impianti svizzeri dismessi sono davvero spettrali.

Description

Ho scelto di partire da Eternon Dessous, ma si può proseguire tranquillamente oltre Eternon Dessus per 1 km fino al tornante con il divieto. Rispetto al percorso di Prailles l’ho trovato meno monotono e subito panoramico ed assolato, ritengo che l’accesso alle mete del vallone de Menouve siano più agevoli da qui. Percorso scorrevole e poco faticoso, prima su poderale e poi lungo il Ru Neuf sino all’alpe Comba German, poi bel sentiero tra i larici fino a Tracaoudette dove si incrocia la pista sterrata che va seguita per un tratto. Entrato nella parte alta del vallone, il colle risulta poco evidente, così come i segnavia del sentiero che sono pochi e un po’ sbiaditi (non è certo un percorso molto gettonato). In ogni caso la traccia è evidente, lascia alla sinistra (non visibile) l’ultimo alpeggio Tsa Nouva e si infila nell’impluvio che culmina con il colletto. Gli ultimi 100 m un po’ più faticosi per le pendenze ed il fondo detritico. Attenzione a delle reti metalliche di contenimento del terreno che spuntano qua e là pronte a tagliare i pantaloni. Al colle ci si affaccia sul desolato versante svizzero con il fatiscente ristorante ex stazione di arrivo di una seggiovia, con tutti i suoi rottami sparsi per il pendio. Per salire in cima conviene scendere la scala metallica per arrivare alla terrazza della costruzione, e poi seguire la scalinata che conduce in vetta dal lato nord, ultimi metri un po’ franati ma senza problemi. elevazione modesta ma bel panorama (eccetto per i rottami). Discesa dal versante di salita, scorrevole e piacevole, non prima di aver salito anche la Tete Rouge e la Tete Verte, un tris di cime colorate, ma questa è un’altra storia.

Bei colori autunnali e giornata tersa e gradevole. Qualche escursionista qua e là ma nessuno su questo percorso.

Ancora molta neve nella parte alta del vallone e sotto il colle, che, tutto sommato, mi ha consentito di salire più velocemente, nonostante lo scarso rigelo notturno. Sicuramente, in un anno come questo, meriterebbe salire qualche settimana prima con gli sci.
