Rifugio in fase di apertura. Poi sono salito fino a Tsà de Chaligne, dove inizia la neve. Qualche albero caduto, ma aggirabile, all’inizio del sentiero nel bosco poi tutto già pulito.

Overview

The Chaligne Refuge is a beautiful stone and wood construction, in typical alpine style, located in the vicinity of the mountain pasture of the same name on the slopes of the famous and popular Pointe de Chaligne, the symbolic mountain of the territory of Gignod.
The route to reach the refuge is very simple and pleasant, suitable for everyone and develops along a comfortable path alternating with dirt roads (the refuge is in fact served by a track reserved for those entitled).
The environment is always varied, in a continuous alternation between pastures with beautiful panoramic views of the Valpelline and wooded areas, where even in the hottest periods you can find a pleasant coolness.
When you arrive at the refuge, at the edge of the larch forest, you can relax in the surrounding green meadows and refresh yourself with typical Aosta Valley cuisine. From here the more trained can undertake the hike to the summit of Pointe de Chaligne.

Reaching the start

From the Aosta East tollbooth take the tunnel along the E27 road leading into the Great St. Bernard Valley, at the end of which you meet the SS27 coming from the center of Aosta. Continue along it passing the village of Gignod.Continue for another 3 km along the E27 to the locality of Condemine, leave the main road in favor of the detour on the left to Gorrey-Buthier.
After 4 km you reach Grand Buthier, then continue on the asphalt road that goes up the whole hill crossing the pastures passing Gorrey, and reaching the end of the asphalt at the hairpin bend at an altitude of 1523 m in the locality of Mendey where the trails begin. You park in the clearings at the side of the road; you cannot continue along the dirt road because it is forbidden to transit.

The route

From the parking area, continue along the dirt road on the left, following the 3A trail marker, immediately touching the large Mendey 1562 m pasture with the two beautiful chalets not far away, in a typically grazing environment with wide meadows full of flowers in the summer. The panorama is already very vast and ranges from the Grand Combin to Valpelline.
We follow the road, with some short asphalt sections, for a few dozen meters until we meet on the right a wooden fence above which the path continues, and from there we soon reach Alpe Roncaille 1664 m, where the dirt road is found again.
At the next bend the trail abandons it again, following a stony track to the right of a wooden fence until it enters the woods where the path becomes very comfortable dirt.
The slopes of the path become slightly steeper, and you will cross the dirt track on several occasions, until you finally come out of the woods at an altitude of about 1850 m, at a vast meadow from which the hut is already visible and no longer distant.
You will find the dirt track again, which will have to be followed in a southeast direction making a long semicircle that is very panoramic, you have a beautiful view of the whole Buthier hill. You then arrive at the Chaligne Refuge 1943 m, surrounded by green meadows and topped by the vast larch forest on the slopes of Pointe de Chaligne. Next to the hut is a small artificial lake where you can even see trout swimming!
The return is done leisurely along the gentle uphill route, admiring the vast views across the Valpelline.
